Achill Harp Festival
The inaugural Achill International Harp festival was held in October 2016. I took part in the beginner harp classes and my husband Denis, the harp making workshop. Over the course of the weekend, he made a harp which he was able to take home. Top class concerts and many sessions added to the enjoyment of the festival as well as talks and an exhibition of harps made by different makers. I would highly recommend this festival and hope to make it back to scenic Achill again. Ita Walsh Newmarket Centre

Tom’s Tales
Big Apple
According to the Society for New York City History, there are several answers to the question of how ‘the Big Apple’ came to refer to New York City. Some commentators have traced the phrase to Depression-era sidewalk apple vendors, others to a Harlem nightclub, and yet others to a popular 1930’s dance of the same name. It was in fact the music world that put the phrase into circulation. In the late 1930’s any jazz musician speaking of a forthcoming appearance in ‘the Big Apple’ was lined up to play in Manhattan, then the most prestigious place in America to perform jazz. But even though they made the phrase popular, New York’s jazzmen didn’t coin it, for it originated at the racecourse. Racing was big business in those days - there were four major racecourses around New York, and three newspapers exclusively dedicated to the races. Racing writer John J. Fitzgerald was the man responsible for linking ‘Big Apple’ to New York. He wrote a column in the New York Morning Telegraph, and said that he first heard the phrase used by black stable boys who had followed the horses to the small quarter-mile tracks in New Orleans and all over the eastern USA and the Midwest. They were so happy to arrive in New York, where the big money was. To them the city was so huge and full of opportunity that they called it ‘the Big Apple’. Fitzgerald liked the phrase so much that he adopted ‘Around the Big Apple’ as the title of his Morning Telegraph column. In 1997 the journalist’s memory was honoured when a street sign reading ‘Big Apple Corner’ was erected in his name outside the hotel, off Broadway, where he had died in poverty.
